Bocas del Toro offers an amazing variety of wildlife and Playa Tortuga Hotel & Beach Resort commits to environmentally responsible practices to ensure that it remains so.

Playa Tortuga is a founding member of the INBOCA Fund, a U.S. AID program in conjunction with WWF (World Wildlife Fund for Nature).

The INBOCA Fund promotes community development and the conservation of the Bastimentos National Marine Park, supporting the sustainability of Bocas del Toro.

Playa Tortuga is proud to have received this year 2011 the Blue Flag award with 3 stars. Blue Flag is an international Eco-Label program which works toward sustainable development at beaches through a strict criteria dealing with water quality and environmental education. The Blue Flag program in Panama is coordinated by the Government through the office of the First lady of Panama.

Playa Tortuga Best Practices
Playa Tortuga implemented five Best Practice Initiatives, allowing guests to enjoy a pleasant stay in tropical paradise while minimizing the impact of hotel operations on the environment.

Water Conservation
Playa Tortuga Hotel & Beach Resort has its own water purification system fed from 3 sources, which treats the water, rendering it suitable for hotel use.

Rainwater, one of the most pure water sources, is harvested from the roof of the hotel. The second water source is well water from a well on Playa Tortuga’s property that fills naturally with rain water. Treated water from the island is the third water source, provided by the island’s public services. All water is treated with a modern purification system to make it suitable for hotel use.

Linen re-use program
Playa Tortuga Hotel & Beach Resort offers a linen re-use program for bed sheets and towels. Unless guests request otherwise, Playa Tortuga changes bed sheets and towels every three days, which saves water, energy, and uses less detergent.

Efficient Energy Use
Playa Tortuga uses efficient fluorescent light bulbs in guestrooms, reducing the power consumption of lighting in the rooms by over 50%.

Guestroom energy saving system
Playa Tortuga guestrooms feature key-activated, power-saving switches that turn off the energy to the guestroom once the key is removed.

Energy utilization plan
Playa Tortuga uses an energy utilization plan for area illumination, designed to offer guests a pleasant and safe experience, while handling the need for lighting according to an established schedule.

Minimizing the impact of cleaning supplies
The hotel uses room and laundry cleaning supplies that are biodegradable to minimize the impact to the environment.

Waste Management
Playa Tortuga waste water is treated to minimize its affect on the environment.
